Hearing Aid Styles in Denver and Surrounding Areas

The type of hearing aid you wear depends on the type of hearing loss you have. So, which one is right for you? At Colorado Ear Care, with locations in Arvada, Castle Rock, Greeley, Lakewood, Louisville, and throughout the Denver area, we help you navigate the many features and capabilities that today’s hearing technology offers. You deserve devices that are expertly fit and programmed to support your specific hearing needs.

Basic Hearing Aid Styles

Hearing aids are available in different styles, sizes, and feature settings. A hearing aid may fit completely or partly in your ear canal, sit in the outer part of your ear, or rest behind your ear. Each offers different benefits. Our hearing care providers will consider your specific needs and goals when helping you choose the right style and features for your situation and ensure that, no matter what style is right for you, you’ll get a comfortable fit and precise programming.

Receiver-In-Canal (RIC) aka Receiver-in-the-Ear (RITE) Hearing Aid

RIC devices, typically smaller than Behind-The-Ear hearing aids (BTEs), are best-suited for mild to moderate hearing loss. The device’s casing is worn behind the ear, but the receiver is worn in the ear. These two components are connected to each other by a discreet wire. A small plastic or silicone piece, called a dome or a custom earmold, is attached to the receiver and is worn in the ear canal.

Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Hearing Aid

The casing of a BTE device is designed to house the aids’ electronics and fit comfortably behind the ear. A small plastic tube is connected to the device on one end and to a standard- or custom-fit earmold on the other. BTEs are a very flexible hearing aid, meaning that they can be used to support a wide range of wearers, from those with mild to even severe hearing loss. When power and adaptability is a must, this style of hearing aid can’t be beat.

Completely-In-Canal (CIC) Hearing Aid

Completely-In-Canal hearing aids are custom-fit devices that are best suited for people with mild to moderate hearing loss. They are often referred to as “invisible” hearing aids, due to their deep placement in the ear canal, which renders them almost impossible to see.

However, they do have a narrow fitting range. Not all ear canals are large enough to wear this style of technology. A small, discreet plastic handle is used for insertion and removal of the device.

In-the-Ear (ITE) Hearing Aid

In-the-ear devices are worn just as the name implies: in the ear. These aids are custom designed to match the shape of your ear’s unique anatomy. They are larger than other custom fit devices, therefore are visible when worn, and can be used to treat mild to severe hearing loss.
